Frikkadelle (Meatballs) with Sweet Potato

The South African (Afrikaans) version of Meatballs.

Ideal for lunchboxes and light-lunches!

Frikkadelle (Meatballs) with Sweet Potato


  • 500 g Ground beef (mince)
  • 1 medium sized onion, diced.
  • 1 Egg
  • 50 g Sweet potato, cooked and mashed
  • 5 g Italian Herbs
  • 50 ml Coconut Oil
  • Salt & Pepper (about 5 ml (1 x tsp) of each)



  • Fry onions in 50 ml Coconut Oil, until see-through; allow to cool down.
  • Take a large ovenproof dish and coat bottom with 100 ml of Coconut Oil.
  • Pre-heat oven to 180˚ C.
  • Mix mince, egg, sweet potato, herbs and salt & pepper together.
  • Add the cooled onions and mix thoroughly.


  • Now you can make golf ball-size meatballs (about 40g each) and place in the oven dish, about 2 cm apart.
  • Bake in middle of the oven for ± 20 minutes, until nicely browned on top.
  • Take out and serve or allow to cool down and freeze with wax paper between layers for easy of taking a few out to defrost at a time.
